Faith and Place

Creating a holy and inviting place for all people
We shape our physical environments and they in turn shape us – particularly our views of each other and the Holy. The Musicant Group has developed a “Theology of Place,” which recognizes that our spiritual places can and should be designed and programmed to bring us together and recognize our common holiness – regardless of our beliefs or faith traditions.

Through the process of placemaking, we will help organizations transform mere “spaces” into “places” that facilitate authentic interaction and fellowship.

A Place-Based Approach to Achieving Your Mission:

A space can be anywhere. A place is somewhere with emotional and spiritual resonance. The Musicant Group works with your community and partners to create:
  • Places that Communicate: Clarify the welcoming spirit of your faith through your physical house of worship, both inside and out.
  • Places that Facilitate Your Mission: Create places for the type of fellowship and community that you are trying to build.
  • Places that Germinate Ideas: Collaborate into the future with your faith community to craft spiritual places that truly meet them where they are.

The Musicant Group “Creates Great Places for People,” helping you and your members create both engaging, people-centered places for fellowship and inviting, holy places for worship.

We work to further the ability of communities of any faith who desire to offer a genuine welcome to all people, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, social status, politics, or other categories of difference.

Concordia University of St. Paul - CSP Ministry's "Gap Space"

Concordia CSP Ministry engaged The Musicant Group to lead a process to:
  • Assist CSP Ministry members to discern a process around what it means to create a welcoming space physically and theologically
  • Build capacity amongst CSP Ministry staff and students, as well as the broader University community around the concept of placemaking
  • Transform a well located, but underused space into a gateway for students into the CSP Ministry
  • Use the transformation and activation of the space and associated process as a pilot project on how to more fully engage with the student body (from all faiths and belief systems) and create welcoming, vibrant, and nurturing physical and spiritual spaces.

Westminster Presbyterian Church: Piazza on the Mall

The Musicant Group partnered with Westminster Presbyterian Church to transform a long dormant plaza into a space that invited the community in and brought the church and its members out to the community.

As part of this initiative, over a 3 month period more than a hundred free and open-to-the-public events were held in the plaza, including:
  • Weekly concerts
  • Weekly yoga classes
  • Outdoor dance lessons
  • Social Jam Sessions (drum circles)
  • Free, public, and mobile sauna
  • Holiday Haut House winter event

These were complimented by large events tailored to church members, which brought them outside and connected them to their immediate surroundings like never before:
  • All Church Picnic (500+ attendees)
  • Cocoa and Carols (200+ attendees)
  • Summer day camp activities
  • Periodic post-service coffee hours and BBQs

Check out the event photo album here.
